Adventitious roots is an online platform, network, studio, installation and archive that explores the adventitious and rhizomatic potential of the Tradescantia Zebrina plant, which has been colloquially called the Wandering Jew.
As you enter the site a black outline of the Tradescantia Zebrina plant will appear, with an instantaneous animation that colours in all the segments that make up each leaf. This begins with one leaf at the very bottom; while the remaining leaves will be activated one at a time, over the next year (each leaf will be launched with a newsletter that you can sign up for below)
Once the animation has loaded you can click on any of the leaves (stems will always remain inactive) that have been coloured in. This will zoom you in closer to the plant and the chosen leaf. From there you can click each individual segment to reveal different content, such as video, photographs, objects, text, sound, illustration etc. A title or brief description might appear at the bottom of the content. There will also be an option to open up a caption on the top right of content, which will open to the left or bottom of the screen, to explain what can be seen and heard. Once you are finished then you can exit the plant by clicking the encircled (x) on the top left of the content. With audio/video content, the sound will continue to play, to then overlap with the next segment and content that you click on. As you click in and out of the content a smaller map will form of the individual segments that make up the leaf, so that you can see where you have been before. With the recent update you can now navigate between the different leaves. You can return to the home page and therefore refresh the page by clicking on the left pointing arrow (←) on the top left of the screen. On the home screen in the same position(top left) there will be a info pop up (i) which you will already have found if you are reading this.
